The Complete Beginner's Guide to Philosophy and Philosophizing
A Guide to Philosophy for Beginners?!
Is this the latest craze of idiocy? Or a contradiction of concepts? Or at least an impossibility in the making? Or is it an exercise in futility akin to advanced calculus for infants, or neurosurgery for ignoramuses?
Neither this, nor that, nor the other. The ancient philosopher Socrates (from the 5th century BC) believed that in great questions, we all start as beginners, but if we humbly realize how little we actually know, then we can truly begin to learn.
The word philosophy simply means (love of wisdom). This meaning is easy to grasp when you understand that love is a commitment, and wisdom is merely an insight into life. Philosophy, then, at its best, is a passionate commitment to pursuing and embracing life's most fundamental truths and most insightful visions. Philosophical questions often deal with serious issues, but we don't need to delve into gloom in our curriculum. In fact, we can enjoy contemplating important things.
As much as we have drawn from the lives of great philosophers over the preceding centuries. Personal anecdotes across this world often provide the right imaginative impetus, necessary to help first-time philosophers see the importance of a particular philosophical question about life, and even glimpse the best path towards its solution. The greatest philosophers always strive to understand life. They want to acquire the deepest possible perspective on this world and on any other world that might exist. They take nothing for granted, but rather question and test in search of enlightenment, insight, and what some call illumination. We all want to understand the context in which we live, move, and have our being. And achieving at least a good start towards that goal is the humble purpose of this book.
In this framework, the book (The Comprehensive Beginner's Guide to Philosophy and Philosophizing) comes as part of the Humanities and Social Sciences project publications initiated by Dar Alam Al-Adab. Undoubtedly, we have published a large number of books belonging to this field before, but this collection has been carefully chosen to be introductory and intermediate entry points for those interested in these sciences, and these are entry points that are actually taught, and therefore they are carefully selected and tested.
